Nové Město nad Metují

A town on the rock— a dream brought to life by its founder, Jan Černčický of Kácov. Thanks to its unique setting, Nové Město nad Metují offers a natural blend of a historic town centre and a magnificent château, whose gardens are linked by one of Europe’s most beautiful covered wooden bridges. The bridge is the work of architect Dušan Jurkovič, who also designed the Bartoň Lodge in Peklo, at the confluence of the Metuje and Olešenka rivers.

The main square is framed by four arcades and features two Czech rarities: a restored Renaissance façade with distinctive “swallowtail” gables, and the narrow lanes of Zadomí. These lead to the remains of the town fortifications and offer a romantic view of the rocky cliff and the River Metuje below. The Municipal Museum is housed in a former artillery bastion in Zadomí and includes an exhibition dedicated to PRIM wristwatches made in Nové Město nad Metují. In the former prison building you’ll find the Zázvorka Municipal Gallery, with a dungeon and tower, as well as regular exhibitions of artworks by local (and other) artists and photographers.

Among the town’s most famous natives are Doc. Josef Sekyra—the first Czechoslovak to reach the South Pole—and the painter and graphic artist Vladimír Suchánek. Nové Město nad Metují also regularly hosts the Czech Film Comedy Festival and the Para-Archery World Cup.
