A mill known as Pekelec stood on the site of today’s excursion restaurant as early as the 16th century. Three hundred years later, the place became a popular destination for nature lovers inspired by the ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Visitors came from nearby towns and villages to explore the area’s natural beauty—and to refresh themselves. The enterprising Novák family offered food and drinks to travellers, and as interest grew, they built a roofed dance hall. Peklo thus became a place for entertainment as well, and together with the Rezek spa, the Rydlo hotel and the Na Rychtě inn, it formed one of the most important social hubs of its kind in the Nové Město region.

A „devilish” restaurant designed by Dušan Jurkovič

In 1908, the Bartoň family bought the estate from Josefa Nováková for 28,000 crowns. The purchase included a sawmill and five hectares of land. A year later, renovation of the Nové Město château began—and at the same time, work started on converting the mill into an excursion restaurant. The folk Art Nouveau redesign based on plans by Dušan Jurkovič was completed in 1912. His unmistakable style can be felt both on the exterior and inside, where a large mill wheel and “devilish” decorations dominate the interior. A new sawmill was also added to the complex, powered by the Olešenka stream.

The converted mill was named Bartoňova útulna (Bartoň Lodge), and true to its name, it has always been wonderfully cosy. Over the years it has welcomed many notable Czech and Slovak visitors, including National Theatre actor Eduard Vojan, presidents Edvard Beneš and Václav Havel, politician Jan Masaryk, and First Lady Lívie Klausová. People from the nearby Rezek spa also came to see it, such as National Theatre director Dr Hillar, Václav Vydra (senior and junior), Jiří Stanislav Guth-Jarkovský and others. Peklo is also a film location—scenes for Divided We Fall (Musíme si pomáhat) and The Death of a Talented Cobbler (Smrt talentovaného ševce) were shot here.

The restaurant sits at the crossroads of nine marked hiking trails. Following the Jirásek Trail, you can reach Holubí palouk, Nový Hrádek (near the ruins of Frymburk Castle and the Marian pilgrimage site Rokole), and Olešnice in the Orlické Mountains (home to Utz’s mechanical Nativity scene). From here you can also head to the Koníček viewpoint or to Dobrošov, where you’ll find the fortress and Jirásek’s Cottage by architect Dušan Jurkovič, complete with a lookout tower. You can return to Nové Město nad Metují either along the yellow trail (via Koníček and the village of Přibyslav) or the red trail (following the river).
