House No. 1226 was added to an artillery bastion in the 16th century. Over the centuries it changed hands many times, and in the 19th and 20th centuries it served as a district canteen and later the municipal archive. After a major renovation, the museum opened here on 28 October 1995.

The exhibitions showcasing the region’s history, crafts and nature have been gradually updated over the years. Visitors can also enjoy the museum’s herb garden, with views over the Metuje river valley and the rocky cliff below.

The PRIM watchmaking legend

For more than 70 years, Nové Město nad Metují has been home to the production of iconic Czechoslovak wristwatches. They were presented as a gift to U.S. President Barack Obama, and swimmer František Venclovský also wore them when he crossed the English Channel. At the museum you can see the rare collection of Ing. Libor Hovorka, including PRIM watches that are the oldest (Spartak), the largest—and the smallest.

The Burgher's Nativity Scene

A long-running project by woodcarver Jarmila Haldová presents a charming panorama of the main square filled with more than a hundred local personalities. Depicted here are painters (Vladimír Suchánek, Vladimír Rocman), the château owners (the Bartoň family of Dobenín), and many traditional professions—led by the town watchman and the printer. Each year, new figures are added, sponsored by families of proud local patriots.

Playful learning programmes

How was a Renaissance town built? And how did a visit to this place influence the lives of composer Bedřich Smetana and architect Dušan Jurkovič?

You’ll find out on guided tours featuring a “living” character of the town’s founder, Jan Černčický of Kácov. The tours are designed not only for schools, but also for pre-booked senior groups and anyone interested in historical gems—with a healthy dose of perspective and humour. An interactive hall called The Town of Watches is also available year-round on the ground floor of the Spolkový dům (Community House).
