Výrov Castle, near Nové Město nad Metují, probably stood here as early as the 14th century. The stronghold controlled the surrounding villages of Bradla, Žďár, Blažkov and Jestřebí, as well as Hradčany, Tábor and the lower part of Horské předměstí. It was most likely a small knightly estate at first. During the Hussite Wars it was badly damaged, and the Lords of Dubá later used it as a prison.

By the time the town was founded (1501), Výrov was already abandoned—along with the Krčín and Černčický fortresses, it was slowly fading into the past. Today, you can still make out the earthworks, the moat and a cellar. The former castle is also mentioned in Alois Jirásek’s novel The Hussite King (Husitský král).

Near Výrov stands the Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, built by the estate captain Matěj Göstl. It lies at the end of the path leading from the Klopotov Valley to Výrov. The chapel was saved from collapse thanks to major repairs carried out in 1938.

Most visitors come to Výrov for Juránek’s Viewpoint. It is named after the local chronicler Jan Juránek, who played an important role in having Nové Město nad Metují designated a heritage conservation area. The title of his book about the town (Český Betlém / “The Czech Nativity Scene”) also gave its name to the iconic view from Výrov overlooking the town.
