Opening hours:
The church is open to the public during the day.
The town’s founder, Jan Černčický of Kácov, dreamed that his “town on the rock” would become a stronghold of the Unity of the Brethren, of which he was a member. The town council decided to build the church in 1513, and it was completed six years later.
The church has an almost square ground plan and originally shared services with the Church of the Holy Spirit in Krčín. The wooden parts of the building were destroyed in the great fire of 1526. After subsequent rebuilding, a tower with a gallery walkway was added.
The church is vaulted with a ribbed cross vault and features Gothic windows. In 1543, Jan of Pernštejn donated a pewter baptismal font bearing the Pernštejn coat of arms with a bison. However, in the second half of the 19th century Dean Pelhřim Novák sold it. Today, the font is kept in the depository of the National Museum.
After the fire of 1639, a new roof structure was erected. In 1677, the church received a new main altar (Holy Trinity) and a new organ by Jiří Weindt of Křešov. Ceiling frescoes were added in 1777. During the time of Prince František Josef of Dietrichstein, the deteriorating roof above the chancel had to be removed and repaired in 1817. The west side of the church once ended in a Renaissance gable with the well-known “swallowtail” shapes, which were taken down in 1875. Today, the rear façade rises only slightly above the roof of the deanery. The “swallowtails” can also be seen on a Marian painting from 1726 on the gallery; in its lower part you’ll find the oldest depiction of the entire main square.
In 1745, the walls were decorated with paintings of the Stations of the Cross. The current Stations of the Cross date from 1905 and were painted by Černčice-born academic painter Josef Šichan. In a niche in the church wall to the left of the entrance stands a statue of St James. This sandstone statue originally adorned the façade of the (now demolished) Church of St Salvator on Republic Square, placed in a niche above the portal facing the former Regional Gate.
The church underwent a major renovation in 1922. It was in very poor condition, and repairs were possible thanks only to Josef Bartoň, the château owner. The roof trusses had to be reinforced and the roof covered with tiles. A cornice was added, replacing the wooden boards that had served that purpose for many years, and the interior was repainted. Between 2018 and 2021, the entire roof structure was comprehensively restored and the roofing replaced.
Today it is the parish church, hosting regular services and concerts (for example as part of the Akademické týdny festival).
